Healthcare services need a clinical brief

Mechanical design should follow the functions of each room, patient pathway and clinical process. General wards, theatres, laboratories, isolation spaces and support areas have different water, drainage, ventilation and medical-gas requirements.

Engaging clinical users early helps the design team confirm outlets, equipment, redundancy and infection-control priorities before walls and ceilings are fixed.

Protect water quality and continuity

Hot and cold water systems require suitable storage, pressure, temperature control and circulation. Dead legs, stagnant zones and poorly accessible components can create hygiene risks. The network should be zoned so maintenance can occur without unnecessarily disrupting the whole facility.

Critical uses may justify additional storage, backup pumping or clearly prioritised supplies. Drainage must also account for specialist fixtures and safe maintenance access.

Treat medical gases as life-supporting infrastructure

Medical-gas systems require controlled sources, distribution, isolation, alarm monitoring and terminal units matched to clinical demand. Source equipment and cylinder areas need ventilation, access and protection, while pipe routing must remain identifiable and separated from incompatible services.

Redundancy and emergency arrangements should be established from the operational risk, not added after equipment selection.

Verification is part of patient safety

Installation quality, cleanliness, pressure testing, identification and verification of gas identity are central to handover. Commissioning responsibilities must be clear, with specialist certification where required.

The owner should receive drawings, valve schedules, alarm information and maintenance procedures. Training helps facilities teams respond safely to faults and planned work.
